The Ford Ranger only has one engine option, a 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4 engine with 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. While this is a decent amount of power, it’s your only option.

On the other hand, the GMC Canyon has three engine options to choose from, giving you more choice and making the Canyon more versatile. You’ll have a choice between two gas and one diesel engine option.

If you opt for a gas engine, the available 3.6L V6 engine provides the most power you’ll get—308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque.

The diesel engine gives you significantly more torque and good fuel economy if that’s what you’re looking for. The optional 2.8L Duramax® Turbo-Diesel engine delivers a whopping 369 lb-ft of torque with an EPA-estimated 20 city and 30 highway MPG to round things off.

Towing Capacity

If you’re choosing a truck, you probably want to tow with it. A couple of hundred pounds can make a difference in being able to tow the boat or trailer you want to bring along on your next adventure.

When properly equipped, the Ford Ranger has a maximum towing capacity of 7,500 pounds.

The GMC Canyon outperforms the Ranger by 200 pounds. Its maximum towing capacity hits 7,700 pounds when properly configured. That much power lets you tow plenty, including medium-size camping trailers, boats, and car dollies.

Interior Features

Choosing your truck should also involve selecting a comfortable and practical interior that’s right for you.

Both the Ford Ranger and GMC Canyon have available leather-trimmed seats and enough room for five. However, the Canyon has 45 inches of front legroom, while the Ranger taps out at 43.1 inches.

The Canyon’s interior also blocks out road noise with its inlaid door design, shear-style body mounts, and liquid-applied sound deadener. You can enjoy the silence on your next drive or listen to music uninterrupted by the road beneath your wheels.

The Canyon also shines above the Ranger in terms of technology. While you get a standard touchscreen infotainment system in the Canyon, you have to upgrade to get this feature in the Ranger.
